Mudslides triggered by heavy rain in a mountain town near Rio de Janeiro have killed 13 people and more might be missing, the town's civil defense department said yesterday.
"They've recovered four more bodies this afternoon," said a spokesman. He said the total of dead had reached 13 and rescuers were still digging in case more bodies were buried under the mud.
Picturesque Teresopolis, a popular weekend getaway spot in the hills about 100 km north of Rio de Janeiro, was hit with torrential rains late on Saturday. - Reuters

Mudslides triggered by heavy rain in a mountain town near Rio de Janeiro, killed 9 people, the town's Civil Defence Department said today, with more victims presumed buried.
Picturesque Teresopolis, a popular weekend getaway spot in the hills about 100 km north of Rio de Janeiro, got hit with torrential rains yesterday.
"Nine bodies were recovered early this morning from the mud," said a spokesperson for the town's Civil Defence who asked not to be identified.
"The slide covered about a football field-sized swath of a lower income neighborhood," he said. "We think more are still buried. We're guessing five or six, unofficially."
Brazil is entering its rainy season, and Brazil's southeast is getting more rain than usual this year.
Earlier this month almost 40 people were killed by flooding and landslides in Angra dos Reis, a popular seaside resort for Brazil's rich and famous about 190 km south of the city of Rio de Janeiro. - Reuters |
